North Notes
Spokane North Rotary Club Bulletin
September 24, 2018

Rotary calendar:
Oct. 1: School and Libraries bonds.  The November general election includes some $495 million for three new Spokane Middle Schools, plus more, and $77 million for three new city libraries, and more.  District Supt. Shelley Redinger will discuss the issues for this important meeting.  Andrew Chanse, Library Executive Director, will discuss details of the libraries’ bond.

Oct. 8: Rotary Connects at The Backyard Public House, 1811 W. Broadway, starting at 4:30 p.m.

Oct. 15: Meet Rotary 5080 District Gov. Bev Reed at noon at Nectar in Kendall Yards.

Oct. 22: Assemble materials and finalize decisions at noon at Nectar in Kendall Yards for our Nov. 2 “Wine & Craft Beer Tasting Under the Big Top” fundraiser event.

Briefly: Yule thoughts: With Halloween just five weeks away, or course it’s time for Christmas thoughts.  Club Treasurer Sandy Fink is coordinating the “$40 for 40” program, in which members provide 40 children in Holmes families with needed items and gifts for $40 each at Christmas time.

A ‘Big Top Tent’ for a big cause

Time is short, but details crystalized nicely at the Sept. 24 work session meeting for the club’s fall fund raiser.

Under the direction of Club President Lenore Romney, a well-planned event will be staged Friday, Nov. 2 in the Kalispel Golf and Country Club’s big white tent.  The Kalispel Club is at 2010 W. Waikiki Road (the former Spokane Country Club).

Ideas flowed as a dozen club members helped shape the plans. Romney said to succeed – hopefully netting about $15,000 – the entire club membership will be needed to work to meet the club’s goals to help Holmes Elementary programs and other children in the West Central and near-North Side area.

Among the needs: a full list of area wineries and wine shops should be contacted by Oct. 22 to get wine bottle donations.  Romney has the list of those who have signed up and open spots to add to the list.  Members may also choose to donate wines from their personal collection.  Please call or e-mail Lenore with suggestions or mention possibilities at the Oct. 1 luncheon
meeting.  Some members will be needed Nov. 2 to help in various ways during the event.

Foremost, sponsor donors are needed to help raise at least one-third of the goal.  That is less than previous fund-raising totals in recent years.

Among the details: Tickets are $75 per person. That includes various wine and beer tasting, antipasto appetizers and a full Italian buffet dinner. The large tent is heated and accommodates well more than 150 guests.

Paper tickets will be distributed Oct. 1 and electronic tickets will be available through Eventbrite, which also will have a “donate” button for the cause.

We will have a “Wine Grab” table featuring an array of wines.  For $20 per “grab,” a participant draws a numbered cork and wins the wine bottle with the corresponding number.  We are asking that donated bottles of wine retail at least $15 or more; we expect that some bottles will be priced well above grab price.

Photos of Holmes Elementary activities and events will be displayed at the event. Music will be provided.

Timing: Registration and wine tasting on Friday, Nov. 2, opens at 5:30 and continues to 7 p.m.  A cash bar with wine, beer and non-alcoholic beverages will be on-site.

The Italian buffet dinner with dessert will be available from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

From 8 to 8:30 p.m., Holmes Principal Stephanie Lundberg and perhaps others will speak and a “call for the cause” paddle raise will follow.

As Romney said, “There are lots of things to do and not much time.  With all of our collective efforts, we can have a fun and successful event.”
